Tomás Estrada Palma resigned as President of Cuba on September 29 1906 amidst political conflict between liberal and conservative forces over the previous year’s disputed presidential election. In the aftermath, U.S. Secretary of War William Howard Taft ordered U.S. military forces to the island under the terms of the 1903 Cuban-American Treaty of Relations, where they remained until January 28 1909 when José Miguel Gómez became president. During this period executive power in Cuba was held by provisional governors Taft (September 29 1906 – October 13 1906) and Charles Edward Magoon (October 13 1906 – January 28 1909).
