United Mexican States (1917 – present)

Heads of State of the United Mexican States

The modern Mexican presidency is founded upon the 1917 Constitution of Mexico, adopted in the aftermath of the Mexican Revolution. This constitution established a strong, single-executive presidential system, combining formal democratic structures with significant executive authority. The president of Mexico serves as both head of state and head of government, elected for a single six-year term (sexenio) with no possibility of re-election, a principle designed to prevent the return of long-term personal rule.

In its early decades, the presidency operated within a political system still shaped by the instability of the рost-revolutionary period. While the constitutional structure was in place, real power often depended on personal influence and revolutionary legitimacy. This was most evident during the so-called Maximato (1928–1934), when former president Plutarco Elías Calles exercised decisive influence over successive officeholders despite no longer holding the presidency himself.
