Republic of Serbia

In 2006, Montenegro became a separate, fully independent country following a referendum. With the union between the two states now dissolved, the modern Republic of Serbia emerged as an independent state at the same time. Later that year, a new constitution was adopted which confirmed the presidency as the country’s head of state, with the incumbent president of Serbia and Montenegro, Boris Tadić, continuing in office.

Under the 2006 constitution, the president of Serbia is directly elected by popular vote to a five-year term and may serve a maximum of two terms in office. The political system is formally semi-presidential: executive authority is shared between the president and a government led by a prime minister responsible to the National Assembly. The president’s constitutional powers include representing the state, promulgating laws, appointing the prime minister with the consent of the National Assembly, and serving as commander-in-chief of the armed forces.
